Nancy Drew Meets James Bond

A few years ago, I had the incredible honor of having my Nancy Keene Mysteries featured in a 6-page spread in "The Sleuth" magazine, a publication devoted to fans of Nancy Drew.

I hope people will enjoy my humorous PG-rated cozy mysteries that take place in some of my favorite cities in the world. They are meant to be read by baby boomers who grew up loving the series, not preteens.

Out of the 5 that I've written, I think my favorite one is The Stolen Mask because it takes place in London and she gets to see a lot of the literary and historical sites in England where I've been. And best of all--she and Daniel Craig are staying at the same hotel! In fact, he's next door to her hotel room. When someone steals his BAFTA award, she helps him find out whodunit. At the end of the story, she gets to walk the red carpet with him at the Academy Awards. Sounds far-fetched, you may ask. A girl can dream, can't she?

Nancy Drew and James Bond

This is a funny story about a teenage sleuth who goes to London with her father and is delighted when she discovers that Daniel Craig (AKA James Bond) is staying at their hotel.  I was inspired to write this book by my love of Nancy Drew books and my love of London.  On vacation in London a few years back, James Bond actually was staying at the same hotel as my husband and I were.  At the time, the actor who played Bond was Pierce Brosnan.  Just like Nancy Keene in my story of The Stolen Mask, I was settling into our upper bedroom when I looked out the window and saw Agent 007 drinking champagne in the hotel's garden. I was as star-struck as any teenage school girl would be.

In this story, Nancy opens the door of her hotel room to retrieve the morning paper and is shocked when Daniel Craig opens the door next to hers to do the same thing.  He is only wearing a towel around his waist.  He sees her in her flannel nightgown and self-consciously looks down at his towel to make sure nothing's showing.  When he catches her looking in the same place, he winks at her and goes back into his room.  Nancy feels her first stirrings of passion and is pleased that she has an opportunity to come to his aid when someone steals his BAFTA award out of his room.

I am a total Anglophile and love all things British--its literature, music, history, and art. I love writing about places I've traveled to, so in this story, I have Nancy sight-seeing at some of my favorite destinations in and around London.  She goes on a Jane Austen pilgrimage, visits Buckingham Palace, shops at Harrods, and pays a visit to the Sherlock Holmes museum.  Nancy is very precocious and has read a lot, so when she tries to solve the case of the stolen mask, she channels Agatha Christie, Sherlock Holmes, and Rumpole of the Bailey.

This book is one of my favorite ones I've written and I hope my readers will like it, too.  So, come with Nancy Keene on a trip to London where she meets James Bond and even gets to walk the red carpet with him at the Oscars when she's back home   A bit of a stretch?  Of course, but a girl can't help but dream.

Here are links where you can purchase this cozy mystery for only 99 cents!!

Books about Great Dads

I was blessed with a wonderful Dad and several of my books are about the special relationship between fathers and daughters, especially those in my Nancy Keene Mysteries. Teenage sleuth Nancy has a father who is every girl's dream of an ideal Dad.  He gives her a tremendous amount of freedom: he is often away on business trips, which leaves her with plenty of unsupervised time to investigate her cases.  It seems like all she has to do all day is to drive around in her vintage blue roadster and solve mysteries.  She has no pestering Mom telling her to clean up her room.    Because her father is a successful attorney, he has plenty of money to treat Nancy and her friends to wonderful vacations, including ones to New Orleans and London.  She can wrap him around her little finger, and almost always gets her way.  How lucky can a girl be?!

In the first Nancy Keene Mystery I wrote, "The Buried Treasure on Route 66", her Dad is having trouble accepting the fact that his precious Nancy has just turned 18, has a boyfriend, and is going away to college.  How will he handle the empty nest?  And what lessons will he learn when he joins Nancy and her boyfriend on a road trip?  This book is rated PG and only costs $1.99.

I love New Orleans and have been there many times, so I have Nancy going there on vacation with her Dad and her friends. When a docent at Oak Alley Plantation is found dead, Nancy will not rest until she figures out whodunit. She has to leave New Orleans before the murder is solved, but Nancy twists her over-indulgent Dad around her little finger and he allows her to return to the Crescent City to stay with her fun and funky Aunt Audrey in "The Ghost in the Plantation".  This book is rated PG and costs $2.99.

My most recent Nancy Keene Mystery finds Nancy, her Dad, and her girlfriend going to London. Nancy has her first serious crush at 16 when she sees that Daniel Craig is staying at the same hotel as they are.  She's a big fan of James Bond and even goes to Harrods to try a find an outfit like one of the Bond Girls to impress him.  When someone steals his BAFTA award out of his hotel room, Nancy is hot on the trail trying to figure out who stole it and why.  This book is called "The Stolen Mask" and is rated PG and costs only $1.99.

Nancy and her Dad are big fans of "A Prairie Home Companion" and she talks him into going on a pilgrimage with her in search of the towns that inspired Garrison Keillor's Lake Wobegon.  Her Dad wants to go on a Bob Dylan pilgrimage while they are in Minnesota, but Nancy has other plans when a bachelor farmer goes missing.  This book is called, "The Missing Bachelor Farmer" and it is rated G.  It only costs $1.99.

All of these eBooks are available at Amazon, iTunes, Barnes and Noble, Google Play, Kobo, and Smashwords.  Three of them are also available in paperback at Amazon.com.

Here's what reviewers are saying about this book:

"I loved it! This is a very clever parody of Nancy Drew set in the current times. Nancy Keene, her father Drew Keene, and her friend Beth travel to London where they not only meet Daniel Craig (James Bond) but also solve his mystery...I love Nancy Drew and I love England. The two together is a winner."

"Great story line for readers who loved Nancy Drew as a young person. It moves quickly and is a fun light read!"

Terrorist Attack

I was stranded in London on 9/11 wanting to get back home and now my niece is stranded in Paris after yesterday's horrible terrorist attack. It's such a helpless feeling when all you want to do is come back to the U.S. and be with your family and you can't. I write about my experiences in London on and after September 11th in the last part of this book.

Here's what Destination Europe: The Summer the World Changed is about.

Based upon real experiences of the author, this travelogue is about two friends who travel to Europe to recover, sight see, meet long lost relatives, and find love in unexpected places. Come along with them as they follow in the footsteps of the Caesars, marvel at the beauty of the Sistine Chapel, see Monet’s garden at Giverny, and go on a literary pilgrimage in Great Britain. On their way back home, aboard a plane at Heathrow, they first hear about the terrorist attacks on 9/11. Their pilot tells them to get off the plane and gather their luggage in the baggage claim area. Where will they go? When will they be able to come back home?

This eBook is only 99 cents and is available at Amazon, iTunes, Barnes and Noble, Google Play, Kobo, and Smashwords.

Where Were You on 9/11? I Was In A Plane

What a sad anniversary we Americans must face each year when September 11th comes around again.  It was a day I'll never forget, on so many different levels.  My husband and I were on a plane in London, strapped in our seats, and ready to come home after two weeks in Europe. We hadn't heard about the terrorist attacks yet until the pilot got on the intercom and told us that two passenger planes had just crashed into two towers of the World Trade Center.  Everyone on the plane was stunned!  It was too awful to be true!  Then, the pilot told us that the airspaces have been closed and we'd have to get off the plane and collect our luggage.  We didn't know where to go or what to do.

This was a special service attended by the Queen, Tony Blair, the American Ambasador,
and me along with hundreds of other commoners

I tell more about this experience in my eBook "Destination Europe: The Summer the World Changed."  This travelogue is a compilation of my happiest memories and favorite places to visit in London, Paris, Rome, and Belgium.  It also covers a literary pilgrimage I went on in England.  I haven't been back to Europe since 9/11.  In a lot of ways, those earlier days were "The Golden Age of Travel" for me. After the attack, I didn't want to ever fly anywhere again for a long time.  I hated the idea that passenger planes were used as "weapons of mass destruction".  Who would do such a horrible thing and how did they get away with it?  September 11th has definitely changed my feelings of safety in the rest of world; but what a glorious time I had in Europe before that fateful day.  Come along with me as I follow in the footsteps of the Caesars, marvel at the beauty of the Sistine Chapel, and see Monet’s garden at Giverny.

85th Anniversary of the Nancy Drew Mysteries

It's hard to imagine, but it's the 85th Anniversary of the first Nancy Drew Mystery.

I was inspired to write my own stories about a teenage sleuth, Nancy Keene. These stories are PG-rated and geered towards women baby-boomers like myself, who grew up reading and loving the series. My Nancy is precocious, filled with esoteric knowledge, kind of nerdy, and has a sense of humor.  She has a close relationship with her father, who is often conveniently away on a business trip, leaving her free to search for clues.  She loves to travel (and so do I) so the adventures I've written take place in some of my favorite vacation destinations.

Here are my Nancy Keene stories; all are available at Amazon, iTunes, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, Google Play, and Smashwords:

The Buried Treasure on Route 66
(Takes place in Arizona & New Mexico)

Ghost in the Plantation
(Takes Place in New Orleans & Louisiana)

The Stolen Mask
(Takes place in London)

The Missing Bachelor Farmer
(Takes Place in Lake Wobegon)

Nancy Drew Meets James Bond

Find out in this humorous story about my teenage sleuth, Nancy Keene, who goes to London with her father and is overjoyed to discover that Daniel Craig is staying at the same hotel as they are. When his BAFTA award is stolen from his room, Nancy is hot on the trail to find the thief. (That is, when she's not going on a Jane Austen pilgrimage or visiting Harrod's to buy that perfect Bond girl outfit that just might catch 007's eye).

Sometimes our readers ask us, "Where did you get the idea for this story?" Most of our books are about our own experiences and our book "The Stolen Mask: A Nancy Keene Mystery" works on the premise of "What would you do if James Bond was at your hotel?"  This actually happened to us: in 1987, before I retired, we were splurging at a very expensive hotel in London and I just happened to look out at the garden from our upstairs hotel room window--and Lo and Behold, there was James Bond!!  Not really, of course, but it was the actor Timothy Dalton, who played the famous secret agent. He was drinking champagne with some other people and toasts were being made.

It was around this time that Timothy Dalton got the news that he would be "The Next Bond". So, that's where I got the idea to write this story in which I have our teenage sleuth, Nancy Keene, going to London with her father. She plans to go on a Jane Austen pilgrimage and do some sight-seeing while her father is attending business meetings, so this novel is partly a travelogue of England and some of the places my husband and I have been to.  It's also a  "mystery" because Nancy turns "sleuth" and is hot on the trail when someone steals James Bond's (Timothy Dalton's) acting award that looks like a mask.
