A Romance Novel All About New Orleans

Who wants to go to New Orleans? Well, I do. In the meantime, this book will have to do. It is a romance novel/travelogue about one of my favorite cities in America. I went there for the first time on my 24th birthday and have returned again and again. This book has all my favorite places to stay, have dinner, see the sights, and listen to some good music. Plus, it's a romance novel about a couple who are getting married at St. Louis Cathedral and spending the night at Oak Alley Plantation. Be an armchair traveler and come along with them in my homage to The Crescent City.

Write What You Know

Most writers like myself have heard the advice, "Write what you know."  I think those are very wise words.  When my husband and I started writing murder mysteries together, I knew that I wanted to talk about Ivan, a convicted murderer.  I used to hang out with him when I was 13 and he was 11. When he was in his mid-twenties, he broke into his girlfriend's house, killed her husband and brutally attacked her.  He gained further noteriety when he escaped from the county jail by climbing down from the roof using tied-together bed sheets. He made it all the way across the country before the cops finally found him.

Ivan is a main character in three of our Detective Santy mysteries.  I've made him the biological father of my female Homicide Detective, Clarissa.  Throughout the series, she struggles with the fact that she is his child and despite her better judgment, tries to help him readjust to life outside of prison when his 30 year sentence is up.  The real Ivan is up for parole right now.

My friends ask me, "Aren't you afraid that he's going to hear about you using his name and story?" I tell them that first of all, I don't use Ivan's real last name. Plus, he'll probably never get out of prison after threatening the judge during his trial.  I've made him a much nicer person in our books than he actually is. He was a nice kid and I don't know where he went wrong.  My husband says, "Even Charles Manson was probably a nice kid once upon a time." Ivan does make a good character for a book.

Here is where the story starts:

A Sequel to Pride and Prejudice

In The Forgotten Sister, the drawing rooms of the Regency era are opened for us to view the world where Jane Austen left off when she wrote Pride and Prejudice. This novel is about Mary Bennet, the plain middle daughter, as she compares herself to her beautiful sisters, tries to get her father to notice her, complains about her mother’s melodramatics, falls in love, considers a move to America, becomes a writer, and a ultimately a champion of those less fortunate. What makes this book different from other books written about Pride and Prejudice is its depiction of the social history in Great Britain during the nineteenth century. Mary Bennet learns about the worlds of their servants in Pemberley, poor chimney sweeps, and factory workers. The Forgotten Sister also proposes the provocative question: What if Mr. Bennet went to school with Jane Austen’s father and had been writing to him for years, telling him all about the antics of his wife and daughters? And, what if Mr. Austen had been sharing these stories with his witty daughter who likes to write? Is that how Jane Austen knows the Bennet family so intimately?

Silence of the Lambs

This psychological thriller is inspired by Silence of the Lambs and the relationship between Hannibal and Clarice.  It is about a female homicide detective who investigates the brutal murder of two teenage girls on a rural road in Orange County, California.  What makes this murder mystery different is that, in the course of the detective's investigation, she realizes that the man who has been leaving upsetting telephone calls on her home phone is the serial murderer.  And he is someone she knows.  Not only does she know him; she used to be in love with him.  How much danger is she willing to put herself into so that she can capture the killer.

eBook is available at most online bookstores.
It is only 99 cents!

Genealogy Roadshow

I'm glad to see that Genealogy Roadshow is back on TV.  I applied to be on the show and told them about my relative from Scotland who was forced to flee to America in 1716 because he fought against the British army.  Once his family knew he'd arrived safely in America, they sent him a chest of gold coins that he supposedly buried, but nobody has been able to find it. I haven't heard from the producers of the show yet, but I did write about it in the first two chapters of my murder/mystery Honeymoon in Savannah: A Detective Santy Mystery

My book's main character is a homicide detective who comes to Savannah on her honeymoon after she'd been on Genealogy Roadshow where they'd told her about her family in Georgia whom she never met nor knew existed.  Her newly-found cousins invite her to Savannah for a family reunion and while she's there, her cousin who is a famous chef, is murdered.  Even though it's her honeymoon, she can't help but get involved in the search for the killer.

High School Reunions

How many of you go to your high school reunions hoping to see "the one who got away"? That's what this PG-rated romance novel is all about. For the most part, it's a true story about my husband & I reconnecting after we became a little older and somewhat wiser. He wrote the section about going back to my house after the reunion. The people mentioned in it are real, too: we really did have a pimp, Playboy centerfold, and famous mystery writer in our class!  5 Star Review on Scribd.

If you are anything like my cowriter and I, now is the time of year when we think about where we want to go on our next trip.  We've been lucky enough to travel and see some amazing places in Europe and America. Many of our books take place in some of our favorite vacation destinations.

Another book we've written that takes place in England is The Stolen Mask: A Nancy Keene Mystery.  It is about a teenage sleuth, (very similar to Nancy Drew) who goes to England with her father and finds out that James Bond (AKA Daniel Craig) is staying at the same hotel they are.  When his acting award is stolen from his room, Nancy is hot on the trail to help find it.

Anyone who has listened to Keillor's radio show shouldn't miss this tale of missing bachelor farmer!
